What's New in Review -- Week of April 30, 2023

(Still working out my kinks here. Seems like I'm missing out on some of the previous week's releases due to algorithmic challenges. Plus, I tend to find re-releases from the early 90s that have not yet had their internet shine. So maybe we'll start featuring some of those. Not sweating a format so early in, ya heard? xoxo)

Bruise Control- Useless for Something
Released: April 28, 2023
Label: TNS Records

Try as you may, but Bruise Control won't be contained by the scene's limited definition and sound of punk. Somewhere between Chubby & the Gang and PEARS -- the comparison even feels trite when there's elements of classic British punk expertly layered throughout this album. They skimmed the scum off the top of an over-boiled pot of familiar tropes and left us with a delicious blend of hearty punk and tasty rock and roll simmered in the streets of Manchester.

Night court - out of control
(Single from forthcoming full length, Humans! )
Released: May 2023

If you ever wondered what would have become of The Exploding Hearts had tragedy not cut their time with us short, Night Court's latest single is a wonderful tribute to the timelessness of power pop. Loose, bass driven, and twangy, the track is so brief that I replayed it maybe five to six times while writing this. The album description brags 16 songs in under 27 minutes and I am looking forward to bopping, shimmying and shaking through every last second.

The Minor Inconveniences - Fuck Boston ep
Released: May 1, 2023
Label: Self-released

Suit up in your leathers for tracks as raw and frayed as your faded black denim. A one man production conceived over a month spent working in Boston, this EP is sharp as a blade. Hardcore Xs cross each song in thick black lines, unashamed to pay homage to the forefathers and current scene breakers who inspired the protest and rage within. This is East Coast hardcore.

Bronko- hoofprints
Released: May 5, 2023
Label: Self-released

Imagine Ari Up and Kathleen Hanna as contemporaries in Cologne in the 80s. Imagine Amyl & the Sniffers, more spooky than glam, and way gayer. You know that tone featured in Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers that felt like maybe she took a wrong left turn despite everything coming together oh so right? Something about Bronko really reminded me of that. The arrangements maintain a steady, not over-complicated groove so as to allow for the raw delivery of lyrics, truths spat on the choke-hold struggle from both the patriarchy and the idea of the self, and then dancing despite it all. The 7 tracks span across a variety of punk flavors, so there's a little something for everyone -- but I think this EP was made with the girls, theys, and gays in mind.

Thee Khai Aehm - hall
(Single from forthcoming full lengthBevvitched or bevvildered)
Released: May 2023
Label: Self-released

Super fuzzed out two piece psychedelic Badlands dwelling punk. That's all I got and frankly, 'twas all I needed.

Rata Negra - bien triste
Released: May 5, 2023

Born under the light of a new moon, Rata Negra harnessed their lunar powers to create tracks so wonderfully ethereal and oceanic that I let the tracks pour over me like water. Lose yourself beneath the surface and you'll find that these tracks are heavily referential --  the band expertly meshes 80s darkwave with elements of surf that then lend themselves over to 60s psych-pop. I was hooked after one listen.
